It's supposed to be Ekram, but since you've teamed up with Karl and have already seen him before Alex and Don arrive, this blank area appears. This works well if you have paired up with the other guys.
If your DLC shows the on/off option, it means that it is active. Simply activate it by clicking on the small square next to on/off (the square turns green), then start a new game and wait for the server to load the DLC resources.
